Deadlines and requirements

How often ECUA expects a test

Emerald Coast Utilities Authority says commercial backflow prevention assemblies are tested annually and residential assemblies are tested every two years. ECUA says the customer still needs the test on that schedule even if a reminder does not arrive.

ECUA requires new commercial water customers to install and maintain a backflow prevention assembly, including on fire protection systems supplied by ECUA. Testing is done by a certified tester and the results are reported to ECUA. Installation is inspected by ECUA.

Fire lines and choosing a tester

ECUA says it does not recommend one tester over another. The list is for customers choosing a vendor who meets the minimum requirements on file with ECUA.

If the assembly is on a dedicated fire line, ECUA says the Fire Marshal may require an additional certification. ECUA points customers to the Florida State Fire Marshal licensing site for properly licensed contractors.
